En este artículo se analiza a seis presidentes calificados como populistas que intentaron extender sus periodos de mandato y promovieron o enfrentaron referendos cuyos resultados difieren en alcanzar o no el voto y el objetivo de introducir la reelección. Se propone que, más que el carácter populista del presidente, los resultados se explican por el grado de institucionalización del sistema de partidos, el funcionamiento del estado de derecho, la distribución del poder entre actores y el apoyo popular. Los casos son Argentina (Carlos Menem), Bolivia (Evo Morales), Colombia (Álvaro Uribe), Honduras (Juan Manuel Zelaya), Perú (Alberto Fujimori) y Venezuela (Hugo Chávez
