Metalanguages and metalinguistic activities are examined from three standpoints : (1) the variable importance given to them by different approaches and methodological trends in the recent history of language teaching ; (2) the place they actually hold in the discourse of the language classroom ; (3) the role that they are considered to play (or not to play) in the process of foreign language acquisition. The paper is an attempt to show how, from each of these standpoints, the reading of the phenomena under consideration is somewhat modified, when one takes into account the many ways and modes in which metalinguistic dimensions manifest themselves and can be observed
