V. Lois Erickson Department of Psychoeducational Studies University of Minnesota Minneapolis, Minnesota I n presenting this paper, we wish to first express our strong belief that the issues addressed, the research pursued, and the programs designed during this crucial transition phase of teacher education will critically shape the direction of schooling for children in the future. As educational psychologists who have taken a long hard look at life span developmental psychology, we have come to see the underlying issue of teacher education as one of adult development. The teacher's own development as an interpreter and constructor of classroom events has been overlooked in both educational practice and research. It is this perspective which provides the central theme of our paper. The need for a paradigm for viewing teacher education in all of its complexity is first stressed, and structural-developmental theories are then set forth as a map for human development that will help tie together the separate constructs being researched in teacher education today. We focus on Loevinger's theory of ego development as a conceptual lens through which teachers' conceptions of teaching and human development in relation to their actual teaching behavior can be viewed. Examples from two case studies are then discussed. Finally, we argue for instructing teachers in methods of analyzing and researching their own teaching as an important focus for inservice education
