The Televised Japanese Language Program (TJaLP) is a system for providing Japanese long distance instruction by recycling videotapes of live classes. This system, supplemented by local coordinators and native‐speaker tutors, has been in operation since the fall semester of 1984, and has been quite successful in terms of students' performance and program evaluation. At institutions where employment of a full‐time instructor is not feasible, this system may prove to be the most effective and economical means of offering instruction in critical foreign languages
