This article reports on a survey of every unionized college and university in the nation. The research considered the impact of faculty collective bargaining on the traditional processes of academic governance, particularly faculty senates. There are several conclusions: (1) on the unionized campuses senates had little influence in the first place, (2) senates have had little success in converting themselves into collective bargaining agencies, (3) in the early stages senates and unions stake out relatively unique territories of influence, (4) in later stages unions expand their influence into traditional senate areas, and (5) a number of factors determine the degree of threat that unions constitute, including the past history of the senate, the legal framework, the leadership and protection of administrators, and the attitudes of the faculty
