Marital Quality, Context, and Interaction
In this study the marital quality of respondents who were currently receiving government assistance was compared with those who were not. Contextual variables (e.g., gender, age, age at first marriage, religiosity, education, etc.) and interactional variables (i.e., escalating negativity, criticism, negative interpretation, withdrawal) were measured as potential correlates with marital quality. Results indicated that those who received government…

The insertion of ‘New Right’ thinking into education
This paper locates and discusses the recent New Right reforms in New Zealand education within the context of the crisis of the welfare state. It examines and critiques such reforms under the theme of the individual versus the community, reviewing both new policies and the relevant literature which has emerged over the last few years. Finally, drawing on the scholarship of various neo‐marxist writers it addresses the issue of alternatives to the b…

Te reo o te tai Tokerau
The national examination of Maori language in New Zealand’ has not, to date, reflected the strong oral tradition of Maori culture. For over a decade oral Maori had been a minor component (15%) of a national examination which had emphasised the skills of literacy. Te Reo O Te Tai Tokerau Project, as part of the State Department's developmental work in Maori, was designed to investigate the feasibility and reliability of teacher‐based assessment of…

Implications for the Conduct of Educational Research of Adopting Dewey's Theory of Inquiry
This paper examines the implications for the practical conduct of educational research of adopting John Dewey's theory of inquiry as a research methodology. Complex theoretical issues generated by his account of inquiry are not discussed, though references are provided in the text. It is argued that educational research conducted according to the tenets of Dewey would be considerably different from traditional research. Teachers would occupy a ma…
A Visual Approach to Training Plan Development
A plan that includes all of the organization's training needs and facilitates management of its training effort is especially important in an era of increasingly scarce resources. Development of a plan that strategically directs training can be difficult, however, particularly in large organizations that contain a number of different but interrelating units. Among the factors impeding formulation of a training plan are lack of clarity or consensu…

A Seminar in Solving Problems on the Job
EDUCATION should result not only in knowledge and experience but also in the ability to use them. The test of classroom learning, therefore, is whether it can be applied by the student in other roles. This is the assumption of all professional education. With this in mind the author several years ago devised a seminar in administration, the purpose of which was to enable the student to learn to transfer his learning to the job. This course requir…

Citizen Diplomacy
One wonders what the ghosts of Talleyrand and Franklin would say were they to visit the diplomatic conferences of today. Where is the suave approach, the graceful phrase concealing bloody warnings dropped by a king to the music of a minuet or passed by an ambassador to a minister of state over the after-dinner port? How surprised they would be at the blunt Bevin with his frequently unconcealed ill humor, at Molotov, rude and blustering, at Byrnes…

invasion and the strength of the French determination to find security. Marshal Foch had commanded the armies in their great victory, but even the French ignored his pleas for security. In spite of this, many of us felt that the French were too vindictive, too unforgiving, too self-seeking. We had insufficient understanding of their fears and sufferings, and consequently no adequate substitute for the French proposals for permanently crippling Ge…
