Thirty subjects took part in three experimental conditions where they received a protein supplement of 19 g, an energy supplement of 420 kcal or a placebo. One hour later they completed three food preference questionnaires. These consisted of ratings of momentary liking for a list of twenty foods (half high in protein and half high in carbohydrate), ranking of the 10 foods most liked, and 5 paired preference comparisons between high protein and high carbohydrate foods. All three questionnaires gave similar findings, with the relative preference for high protein foods being reduced following the protein supplement but with no effect of the energy supplement on the relative preference. The paired and ranked questionnaires gave clearer indications of relative preference than the hedonic ratings. Both supplements gave reduced momentary liking for the listed foods
