A two-hour training sequence based on Tough's categories of children's functional use of language was found effective in decreasing the percent of reporting questions asked by student teachers conducting discussion lessons, as compared to un trained student teachers. The training regimen also increased the percent of logical reasoning, predicting, and projecting questions asked by the student teachers. Implications for teacher education programs are discussed by the authors
