The linguistic accuracy of chatbots
This paper reports on the linguistic accuracy of five renowned “chatbots,” with an evaluator (an ESL teacher) chatting with each chatbot for about three hours. The chatting consisted of a series of set questions/statements (determined as being in the domain of an ESL learner) – aimed at assessing the accuracy and felicity of the chatbots' answers at the grammatical level. Results indicate that chatbots are generally able to provide grammatically …

Concordancing Yourself
This exploratory study involves the construction and analysis of a corpus of an individual's own academic writing. Following an examination of the area of academic writing and the position of academic writing corpora within it, the paper discusses how a 'personal corpus' might be put together, along with issues of the necessary quality and quantity of 'text', and problems which may arise in the construction of a personal corpus. The paper also pr…

Perceptions of a multimedia syllabus—making the demands of a performance test more accessible
Technology as an Awareness-raising Tool for Sensitising Teachers to Features of Stress and Rhythm in English
This paper discusses language awareness activities for sensitising trainee English-language teachers to suprasegmental phonological features in English, with particular reference to features associated with the concept of 'stress timing'. After an initial discussion of stress timing and how it relates to English, the article discusses the use of quasi-authentic material drawn from a television programme – with which course participants were famil…
The use of audio or video comprehension as an assessment instrument in the certification of English language teachers
Partial Parsing
This paper describes a computer program which performs a particular type of grammatical/syntactic analysis—the assigning of structural boundaries between orthographic words in written English text. The Boundary Marker has been designed, in principle, as an analyser of unrestricted text and has been developed by using, as far as possible, authentic text as data for analysis. This paper first presents a brief overview of boundary marking as a metho…
A practical introduction to corpora in a teacher training language awareness programme
This paper sets out a series of awareness tasks for introducing ESL teachers to English language corpora and concordances. Teachers start by examining single words, related words and structures against a single corpus, then compare features of English across different types of corpora, and finally explore the different corpora on their own. The main aim of the tasks is not so much to teach teachers more about the English language, but to make the…
Defining boundaries between words
This paper describes the linguistic basis for the operation of a computer program which performs a particular type of grammatical/syntactic analysis—the assigning of structural "boundaries" between orthographic words in written English text. While the nature of the "boundary" as a linguistic element is implicitly recognized—as with the functional/systemic grammar word → above; group → above; clause hierarchy—an explicit definition of the "boundar…
Towards a common ability scale for Hong Kong English secondary-school forms
This article describes the construction of a common scale which attempts to span the English language ability range of students in the Hong Kong secondary-school system. The purpose of the scale is principally to give English language teachers a reference point - a 'snapshot' - of their students' ability level so that they may access materials in a testing database at points of ability which are appropriate to different groups of students. The te…
