L'auteur etudie les effets de la qualite des conditions d'accueil, notamment l'importance des interactions verbales entre les enfants et le personnel, sur le developpement intellectuel et le langage. Les sujets, enfants âges de 36 a 68 mois furent observes dans 9 centres dont l'auteur a evalue les caracteristiques principales (espace ecologique, competence du personnel, activites, taux d'interactions verbales avec le personnel et les compagnons d'âge)
